How WoW Transmog Works
When you loot any item in WoW, its appearance is permanently added to your Appearances collection (Wardrobe). You can apply any collected appearance to any matching gear slot, regardless of whether you still own the item. This means running old raids isn't just for nostalgia — it's collection content.
Class-specific gear (tier sets, class-specific drops) can only be collected by that class. Weapons can be collected by any spec that can use that weapon type. Many players have hundreds of hours invested in transmog collection.
Best Raids for Transmog Carries
Current expansion raids: The War Within's Nerub-ar Palace offers completely unique appearance sets — insectoid armor designs unlike anything from previous expansions. These are available fresh from current Normal and Heroic carries.
Previous expansion classics: Sepulcher of the First Ones (Shadowlands) has the most-sought Cosmic/Void aesthetic gear. Sanctum of Domination has the Jailer's dark plate and cloth sets. Both are soloable at current ilvl by most specs.
Mythic Appearance Carries
Mythic difficulty drops the most prestigious appearance variants — often with different color tints or glow effects not available from lower difficulties. These cannot be soloed and require a carry team even at expanded difficulty.
GG Market offers "appearance carry" packages specifically for transmog collectors. These include loot reserve (you're marked as needing all appearance drops), and some sellers even offer loot logging (they track your wardrobe gaps and prioritize accordingly).
Efficiency: Which Slots to Target First
Weapons have the most visual impact per transmog slot — especially two-handers and unique-model weapons like those from Mythic raids. Head and shoulder pieces have the second-highest visual impact. Chestpiece completes the set read.
For cost efficiency, prioritize appearance carries that include all eight bosses in a Normal clear. Each boss has its own loot table with different appearance slots. A full clear run gives you the most unique appearances per dollar spent.
Legacy Content vs Current Carries
Legacy content (raids 2+ expansions old) is often soloable by skilled players. Current content (current expansion raids) requires a team. The choice depends on what you're after: if you want current-expansion appearances, you need a current carry. If you want the Lich King's breastplate or Cataclysm tier sets, you can farm those solo with a WoW game account and enough patience.
For current-season transmog completionists, carry packages typically include 6–8 runs spread over 3–4 weeks (once per lockout) to maximize appearance drop coverage.
