How LoL Placements Actually Work
Most players assume placement matches determine their rank. The reality is your MMR from last season (or from normal games if you're new) is the primary input. Riot stores your hidden MMR between seasons, and placement results adjust it slightly based on wins and losses.
If you ended last season at Platinum III and win all 5 placements, you might start Gold I or Platinum IV. If you lose all 5, you might start Gold III or Gold IV. The variation is smaller than players expect — the "magic 5 wins" mindset oversimplifies the system.
What MMR Is and Why It Matters More Than Rank
MMR (Matchmaking Rating) is your hidden true skill estimate. It determines who you play against and how many LP you gain or lose per game. High MMR relative to your visible rank means you gain lots of LP per win and lose little per loss — you climb fast.
Low MMR relative to your rank (called "elo decay") means the opposite — you gain 15 LP per win and lose 25 per loss, making climbing feel like a nightmare. Placement seasons are a chance to reset this relationship.
How to Maximize Your Placement MMR
Win your last 5 ranked games of the previous season before it ends. Season end MMR carries over most heavily. Play normal games in the off-season on your main account — even normal wins update your hidden MMR slightly. Enter placements fresh and focused, not after a tilt session.
Avoid playing when you're tired or frustrated during placements — the system weighs these games more heavily than regular season games for initial seeding.
Placement Boosting: How It Works
Placement boost services on GG Market have two formats. The seller plays your placement games (piloted) — you start the season at the highest possible seeding for your MMR bracket. Or the seller plays alongside you in duo during your placement games, giving you the mechanical advantage to win more.
Placement boosts are among the most popular seasonal services because they take 30–90 minutes (5 games) and set the trajectory for the entire ranked season. Starting Gold IV instead of Silver II with the same underlying MMR can save weeks of LP grinding.
After Placements: Setting Up for a Strong Season
However you start, your first 20–30 games of the season are your fastest ranking period. Your MMR is actively calibrating, so win streaks create enormous LP gains. Focus your first week on playing your best champions in your best mental state.
If you placed lower than expected, don't panic-queue. Take a coaching session early in the season to identify what's holding you back — catching it in week one saves months of grinding later.
